2026 Riverside County CCW Guide: Application, Training, Live Scan & Qualification

Updated September 2026. This guide explains the current Riverside County CCW process using Riverside County Sheriff and California DOJ guidance. Requirements can change, so applicants should verify current instructions with the issuing agency before submitting.

How to apply for a Riverside County CCW

  1. Start your application through the Riverside County Sheriff CCW application system.
  2. Gather the identification and residency documents required for your application type.
  3. Complete fingerprinting as directed by the Sheriff. Riverside County recommends starting the application and obtaining your Permitium order number before fingerprinting.
  4. Complete the required CCW training before the application process is finalized. Riverside County states that new applicants need a 16-hour course and renewal applicants need an 8-hour course.
  5. Complete live-fire qualification with every firearm you want listed on the permit.
  6. Submit the required training and qualification documentation and complete the remaining licensing steps directed by the issuing agency.

Do I need training before my interview?

No. Riverside County Sheriff currently states that applicants do not need to complete the safety course before the interview. Training must be completed before the CCW application process is completed and the permit is issued.

How long is Riverside County CCW training?

Current Riverside County guidance requires a 16-hour course for an initial CCW and an 8-hour course for renewal.

Do I have to qualify with every firearm?

Yes. Riverside County requires live-fire qualification with every firearm listed on the CCW.

Important 2026 renewal change: Live Scan

For renewal applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, California requires new fingerprints through Live Scan. Renewal applicants should follow the current Live Scan instructions supplied through their issuing agency.

When should I start a Riverside CCW renewal?

Riverside County currently instructs renewal applicants to apply within the 180-day period before the expiration date shown on the current permit.
