Carrying a firearm in public brings a higher level of legal, tactical, and ethical responsibility. The NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home (PPOTH) course is the flagship curriculum for responsible citizens who want to confidently carry a concealed handgun in daily life.

Building on fundamental marksmanship and in-home defense principles, this advanced course focuses on the physical skills required to survive a violent public encounter. From drawing cleanly from concealment to engaging threats while moving and utilizing cover, PPOTH equips you with real-world defensive tactics.

Participants must be law-abiding adults who possess intermediate gun handling skills. You must show proof of NRA PPITH certification, a recognized intermediate pistol certificate, or pass a pre-course shooting assessment.

Present from Concealment: Safely and efficiently draw your firearm from strong-side hip holsters, purse carries, or concealment garments under stress.

Execute Dynamic Range Drills: Master shooting while moving, firing from awkward or non-standard shooting positions, and utilizing physical cover and concealment.

Master Special Shooting Techniques: Develop rapid flash sight picture techniques, point shooting at close quarters, low-light engagement strategies, and multi-target engagement.

Understand Public Self-Defense Law: Gain deep insight into legal self-defense, use-of-force thresholds outside the home, state concealed carry statutes, and interacting with law enforcement.

Develop a Defensive Mindset: Cultivate high-level situational awareness (Cooper’s Color Code) to identify threats early, avoid confrontation, and de-escalate whenever possible.
